Everything you need to know before spending a single penny.
Your website is the one sales rep who works 24/7, never takes a sick day and represents your business to every single person who Googles you. This guide is a practical breakdown of what to think about, what to look for and what to ask when commissioning a new one, whatever route you decide to take.
Know What You're Actually Buying
There are two main routes to a new website. Neither is universally right or wrong - the best choice depends on your goals, your budget and what you actually need the website to do.
The template route
Template websites begin with an existing design framework, customised with your branding, content and imagery. They can offer a quicker route to launch and work well for businesses that need a straightforward online presence. Because the underlying structure already exists, some design decisions and layouts will be shaped by the framework - and editing things further down the line can sometimes be limited by it. They often rely on plugins to extend their functionality, which is worth factoring into your thinking.
The custom route
Custom websites are designed and built from scratch around your specific business, audience and objectives. Every layout, user journey, and interaction is created with purpose. This approach typically involves more upfront planning, but the result is a website that reflects your business properly from day one - with no inherited constraints from someone else’s framework. At Wizard Pi, every website we build is custom-designed, because every business has its own audience, objectives and personality, and a website built around those specifics will always perform better than one that wasn’t.
One common misconception: custom doesn’t automatically mean more expensive. If a template needs significant reworking to fit your requirements, the cost of unpicking and rebuilding it can add up quickly. It’s worth understanding what’s included (and where the limits are) before committing to either route.
A custom website is not a luxury. It is the difference between a space built around you and a space you’re trying to fit yourself into.
Platform Choice Matters
Your website has to live somewhere, and the platform it's built on shapes everything from how fast it loads to how easy it is to update. It's worth asking which platform an agency builds on and why… because not all of them are designed with the same priorities in mind.
How most platforms got here
Many of the most widely-used website platforms started life as simple publishing tools and have evolved through layers of updates, extensions, and third-party plugins ever since. For a lot of projects, that works fine. It's worth knowing, though, that some platforms rely heavily on plugins to enable core functionality - contact forms, security, performance optimisation, and each plugin you add comes with its own update schedule and its own potential for things to conflict or break. The more a site depends on them, the more ongoing attention and frequent maintenance it tends to need just to stay in good shape.
What to look for
A platform that handles security and performance at the infrastructure level, rather than through add-ons, will generally need less maintenance over time. If the agency you're talking to can explain clearly why they build on the platform they do - and what that means for your day-to-day experience of owning the site - that's a good sign.
Why We Build in Webflow
We build in Webflow because it's built for exactly what we do. Total design freedom, no template constraints, and the ability to bring genuinely custom ideas to life without the platform getting in the way. The platform backs that up technically too. Here's what that means in practice:
- Constantly evolving - new features and integrations ship regularly. When Webflow improves, your site benefits automatically.
- Clean performance - optimised HTML, CSS, and JS out of the box. No plugin conflicts. Core Web Vitals wins, which are a direct Google ranking factor.
- Integrations that actually work - HubSpot, Mailchimp, GA4, Hotjar, Zapier, Salesforce, Klaviyo, Meta Pixel, and more. Clean connections, not bolt-ons.
- You’re in control - Webflow’s editor is built for non-developers. Update content, swap images, publish posts - no developer required.
- Security by default - handled at the infrastructure level. Nothing to forget, nothing to patch, nothing that breaks if you touch it.
We could build on other platforms. We choose Webflow because it’s the right tool for the job, every time.
What Makes a Great Website Brief
A website is only as good as the thinking behind it. Before you brief anyone, get clear on four things:
- Who is it actually for? Not ‘everyone’. Who is the specific person you most want on your homepage, and what do they need to feel before they act?
- What do you want people to do? Every page needs a purpose. The action - call, quote, download - should be obvious and effortless.
- What actually makes you different? Not your values. The tangible, specific reason someone should choose you over the next result in Google.
- What does success look like? More enquiries? Lower cost per lead? Know your metric before you start.
A good agency will push back on your brief. Not to be difficult - because the best work comes from asking the questions you haven’t thought to ask yet.
What a Proper Build Actually Looks Like
A quality website project is a structured process with clear stages and collaborative checkpoints. Here’s how ours works.
Phase 1: Discovery and Strategy
Site structure, functional requirements, and agreed scope. Nothing gets built until we know exactly what we’re building and why. Rush this, and everything after it shifts.
Phase 2: Planning and Wireframing
User journey mapping and structural layout - before a colour is chosen or a pixel placed. This is where the logic lives.
Phase 3: Visual Design
Homepage first. Full visual direction - styling, components, typography - presented for feedback and a round of amendments. Once approved, this becomes the blueprint for the rest of the site.
Phase 4: Full Site Development and CMS Build
Full build based on approved styling: all pages, CMS, core functionality, ecommerce integration, and initial SEO structure. Content goes in here - either written by us or supplied by you.
Phase 5: Final Development
Second round amendments applied, content refined, ecommerce fulfilled. Closes with a full preview and final amendments session. Refinement, not restructuring - the big decisions are made.
Phase 6: Go Live Preparation
Final amendments, responsive optimisation, form testing, content checks. Sign-off confirms launch readiness.
Phase 7: Go Live
Domain configuration, site live, cookie consent, post-launch SEO setup. Then we celebrate. Briefly.
The whole process runs collaboratively. The more responsive you are at each checkpoint, the smoother and faster it moves.
Things Worth Paying Attention To
- "We have a template that would work perfectly." That might be true - but it's worth knowing whether the recommendation came before or after they understood your business.
- No discovery process. If they can quote without understanding your business, they’re quoting a generic product.
- Vague on ownership. Who owns the site, the hosting, the access? You should.
- No mention of performance or SEO. A beautiful website no one can find is expensive art locked in a cupboard.
- Lots of plugins. The longer the list, the more things that can break.
- No post-launch plan. A website isn’t a one-and-done. Ask what happens after go-live.
The Questions Worth Asking
- Custom build or template?
- Which platform, and why?
- How many plugins will it rely on?
- Who handles hosting, and at what ongoing cost?
- Can we edit content without developer support?
- How do you approach SEO during the build?
- How many revision rounds, and how does the design process work?
- What integrations can you connect to our existing tools?
- What happens if something breaks after launch?
- Can we see case studies of similar projects?
If any of these make an agency uncomfortable, that’s useful information.
One last thing
Your website works around the clock, compounds over time and represents your business to strangers before anyone at your company has said a word to them.
